OPENING EVENT: OSHARA PLAZA SCULPTURE COMPETITION!

Oshara Village is proud to announce the Opening of its First Sculpture Exhibition to be held at the new Oshara Plaza from 4 - 7 pm on October 6, 2007.

This is the first major cultural event to be presented on the Oshara Plaza since the ground-breaking of this exciting new sustainable community, which is unfolding on the south side of Santa Fe, north of SF Community College. This exhibition represents Oshara Village's commitment to feature quality arts and cultural events along with diverse commercial opportunities for the entire city of Santa Fe. Music and refreshments will accompany the opening event on October 6, 2007.

The exhibition includes the results of a sculpture competition held in August 2007. The judges of the competition were: Stuart Ashman, Cabinet Secretary, NM Dept. of Cultural Affairs; Guy Cross, Publisher & Creative Director of THE magazine, and Anna Hansen, Director of Community Building for Oshara Village and former Coordinator for NM Arts "Save Outdoor Sculpture" program. The winners of the competition will be revealed at the Opening Event on October 6 and the selected sculpture will be on display for several months. There will be 4 cash prizes awarded.

The exhibition represents a broad range of contemporary sculpture created by accomplished New Mexico artists: Ed Haddaway's assemblage sculptures form three-dimensional poems out of simple, whimsical shapes; Dana Chodzko, a professor at IAIA, contrasts soft and harsh by covering the surface of a curvilinear, female form with a mosaic of broken ceramic shards; Jeff Turner's abstract sculpture of dense, geometric forms stands in contrast to the light, linear designs of Barret DeBush's figurative work, which speaks to the relationship between individual and collective. Other artists who are represented in the show include: Gigi Gaulin, Alex Giorgio, Laied Hovland, Jamie M. Rohe and Christopher Thomson. The work of two student sculptors from SFCC will also be included, as well as a few works by Tony Price, (to be later installed in a future Tony Price Museum, that will be located within Oshara Village.)

Oshara Village is a mixed-use, mixed-income community, designed with concepts of New Urbanism and Green Building, in which energy efficient homes, constructed with the highest standards of architectural design, are built within a layout of the traditional neighborhood, offering community members easy access to basic necessities, commercial and cultural activities without having to drive in their cars.

The Oshara Plaza is located on the South side of Santa Fe, off Richards Avenue, just after the I-25 overpass and before the SF Community College. Turn left on Willow Back Road and make another immediate left on White Feather Road to arrive at parking areas near Oshara Plaza.

Photos of all the work in the exhibition are available. For further information, contact Anna Hansen at Oshara Village: 505-946-2167 or anna@osharavillage.com.
